International Research Cluster 2023/24

Subproject 4: The Role of HEIs in Capacity Building and Conflict Prevention

This project will discuss the role universities can play to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially SDG 2 (“zero hunger”), SDG 8 (“decent work and economic growth”), SDG 16 (“peace, justice and strong institutions”) and, most importantly, SDG 17 (“partnership for the goals”). We will work on a discussion paper analysing the “Global Responsibility” of universities to achieve the SDGs. Furthermore, during the directorship of the international research cluster, we will organise several activities, including a virtual lecture series and an in-person workshop in Cologne, which will bring together all research partners and facilitate collaboration and knowledge exchange. In this context, all researchers - from student to professor - will present the results of their work on conflict-induced displacement, livelihood transformations, remittance channels and economic resilience. Finally, best practices of capacity building for scholars and students at risk will be exchanged. All partner universities have relevant programs to support refugee students, integrate them into study programs and promote their academic careers. We will jointly reflect on how to strengthen the existing structures and to network with private and public institutions that support those at risk.
