Winter semester 2023/24

MA course on “Conflict-Induced Displacement”, jointly taught at the University of Cologne with contributions by all sub-projects

Course Description

This seminar provides insights into the ongoing work of the International Research Cluster “Conflict-Induced Displacement and Socio-Economic Resilience: Learning From Neglected Conflicts in Cameroon and Myanmar“ (https://cif.uni-koeln.de/projects/international-research-cluster-2023-michaela-pelican). The cluster involves researchers across different countries (Cameroon, Thailand, Germany) and disciplines (anthropology, economics, geography, political science, sociology), who jointly study the economic strategies of persons displaced by the Anglophone Conflict in Cameroon and the military coup in Myanmar. Besides academic analyses, the cluster engages with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) relevant to the cases under study and reflects on how Institutions of Higher Education can contribute to their implementation.

The seminar talks to Masters Students with an interest in conflict, migration, livelihood, economic integration, remittances and development, and who are open to engaging with different disciplinary and regional perspectives. The seminar will include guest lectures by several members of the research cluster which will be coupled with corresponding anthropological perspectives. Students will acquire a basic understanding of the conflicts in Cameroon and Myanmar, as well as the theoretical concepts and research methods used to study the economic strategies of the persons displaced from these conflict regions.
